Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Scheme

With reference to the voluntary Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme, the mandatory CPD scheme was implemented on 1 July 2023 as the commencement of the first 3-year cycle. All registered physiotherapists, independent of their current residence and Parts of Registration, are subjected to the Mandatory CPD(MCPD) scheme. Registrants are required to attain at least 45 CPD points (with at least 23 CPD points are core CPD activities) and a minimum of 5 CPD points for each year within the 3-year cycle. Registrants are advised to visit the PTB website regularly for the updates and requirements of the MCPD Scheme. Towards the end of the 3-year cycle, individual registered physiotherapist must declare the CPD attainment.


Announcement of CPD Point Requirement

An important update regarding the point requirements of the mandatory Continuing Professional Development ("CPD") scheme, as endorsed by the Education Committee of the Physiotherapists Board, is given below :-

Registrants are required to attain a minimum of 45 CPD points in a 3-year CPD cycle with a minimum of 5 CPD points in each year during the cycle. (A “year” here refers to a period from 1 July of a year to 30 June of the following year). Moreover, a minimum of 23 CPD points out of the 45 CPD points are required to be attained from core CPD activity in every 3-year CPD cycle.

Physiotherapists registered after the start of a 3-year mandatory CPD cycle are required to comply with the mandatory requirement on a pro-rata basis, if a registrant is registered during the first year of a 3-year cycle, a minimum of 30 CPD points should be attained in the remaining 2 years whereas registration during the second year of a 3-year cycle, a minimum of 15 CPD points should be attained before the cycle ends. For registrants enrolling in the last year of a 3-year cycle, a 1-year grace period will be granted and no CPD points are required. An honour system is adopted, and registrants are required to declare the fulfillment of requirement of mandatory CPD nearer the end of the cycle (i.e. 30 June 2026). Registrants are advised to visit the PTB website regularly for the updates and requirements of the mandatory CPD Scheme.

For individual physiotherapists to document CPD records -

Every registrant must record personal CPD activities in the following CPD Record Form(s) with relevant document proofs for random audit check.

For individual physiotherapist / organisation application for accreditation of CPD activity / programme -

For activities / programmes under Category I "Attendance at lecture / seminar / conference" or Category II "Post-graduate studies" NOT listed as “Pre-approved CPD Programmes” and “Accredited CPD programmes for 2023-2026 CPD cycle”; and NOT organised by an Accredited Programme Provider; accreditation by the Physiotherapists Board and appointed Programme Administrator is required for the granting of CPD points.

Please email the completed application form with relevant supporting documents to pt.cpd@dh.gov.hk for the responsible Programme Administrators to proceed.
