Guidelines for Consideration of Quotable Qualifications

  1. Section 5.8 of Part III of the Code of Practice provides that only qualifications which have been approved by the Optometrists Board may be displayed either inside or outside the premises or on any stationery used in the conduct of the business.
  2. Registered optometrists should refer to the list of quotable qualifications published on the Optometrists Board's website for approved qualifications for the purpose of section 5.8 of Part III of the Code of Practice.
  3. For master or doctoral degrees, including research degrees such as Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which are directly relevant to the optometry profession as conferred by a recognized optometry school are quotable. No prior approval from the Board is required.
  4. For the purpose of item (c), recognized optometry schools refer to -
    1. optometry schools / colleges / departments of academic institutions / universities as prescribed in Section 4 of the Optometrists (Registration and Disciplinary Procedure) Regulation; and
    2. those included in the list of non-local academic institutions awarding optometry qualifications generally accepted by the Optometrists Board for registration under section 12(1)(b) of the Supplementary Medical Professions Ordinance as provided under section D, Appendix IV to the "Guide to Applicants".
  5. Save for qualifications that are pre-approved or on the list of quotable qualifications, prior approval is required from the Optometrists Board before the qualification(s) can be quoted. Registered optometrists who quote unapproved descriptions or qualifications may subject themselves to disciplinary actions.
