Continuing Professional Development

Continuing Professional Development ("CPD")

Mandatory CPD Scheme

Generally modelled on the voluntary scheme, the mandatory CPD Scheme for all registered optometrists has been implemented with the commencement of the first 3-year cycle on 1 July 2021. The main purpose of implementing CPD is to make optometrists commit themselves to life-long continuing professional learning through education and training. Through CPD, optometrists will be able to keep pace with rapid advances in optometry in terms of knowledge, skills and practical experience for the provision of professional service. An attainment of 30 CPD points in each 3-year cycle is required. At the time when a cycle is about to end, registered optometrists are required to declare their CPD attainment alongside the declaration to be made in respect of the renewal of annual practising certificate.

Manuals of Mandatory CPD Scheme

  1. Manual for Continuing Professional Development Scheme
  2. Manual for Accreditation as Provider of Continuing Professional Development Activities
  3. Manual for Validation of Continuing Professional Development Activities

For the Code of Practice, please refer to the "Code of Practice" page under "Conduct and Discipline" of the Board's website.

To help the profession understand the new scheme, a Question and Answer (Q&A) session has been jointly held by the Education Committee of the Board and the four Accredited Programme Providers ("APPs") on 17 June 2021.
