Qualifications for Limited Registration

Limited Registration under section 13A of the Allied Health Professions Ordinance

According to section 13A of the Allied Health Professions Ordinance (AHPO), a person may be registered as with limited registration if he / she satisfies the Supplementary Medical Professions Council that:

  1. the applicant has been selected for full-time employment as a person with limited registration in a designated institution specified by the Council;

    Schedule 2 of AHPO stipulates that Designated institutions include Department of Health, Hospital Authority, Primary Healthcare Commission, and The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong

  2. the applicant has obtained a qualification outside Hong Kong and the Allied Health Professions Council is satisfied that the qualification is sufficient for the applicant to perform the scope of work of the employment;

  3. the applicant possesses a valid certificate, issued by a certifying body recognized by the Council from time to time, to practise the relevant profession constituting sufficient evidence of his/her competency to practise the relevant profession;

  4. the applicant has had at least 1 year of full-time post qualification experience that is relevant to the employment; and

  5. the applicant is of good character and has good professional conduct.


On approving an application, the Council—

  1. must specify a period of not more than 3 years during which the registration is to be in force; and
  2. may impose any condition that the Council considers appropriate.

Application Procedures – Limited Registration of Radiographer

  1. The applicant should complete and send the application form and the following to the Designated Institution :-

    1. four unmounted copies of a coloured photograph (passport size);
    2. a certified true copy of Hong Kong Identity Card/Passport;
    3. a certified true copy of proof of qualification outside Hong Kong;
    4. a certified true copy of valid certificate issued by a recognized body to practise the profession of radiographer constituting sufficient evidence of the applicant’s competency to practise the profession;
    5. a certified true copy of certification of experience with details of the workplace, the scope of work and clinical hours, etc. issued by the existing or former employing institutions / designated authorities evidencing the applicant’s possession of adequate and relevant full time post-qualification experience;
    6. original references as to the applicant’s character from 2 persons, not being the applicant’s relatives, who have known the applicant for at least 12 months and who have the opportunity of judging the applicant’s character;
    7. original certificate of standing or equivalent issued (within 3 months before the application) by :-
      1. issuing authority of a place outside Hong Kong in which the applicant is currently practising / had practised the profession of radiographer; and / or
      2. employing institution(s) in which the applicant is currently practising / had practised the profession of radiographer.

    Only submission via the Designated Institution will be accepted.

  2. Upon receipt, the Designated Institution should check and ensure the Application Form and required support documents have been submitted by the applicants.
  3. The Designated Institution should pass the Application Form, Certificate of Employment and all necessary documents listed on the Document Checklist to the SMPC Secretariat.
  4. If the application is found in order, the Secretariat will notify the applicant to pay the prescribed fees upon approval granted by the Council. If supplementary information / supporting documents are required, the Secretariat will inform the Designated Institution which would liaise with the applicant further.
